French PM-Inflation Reduction Act Must Not Distort Competitiveness

Speaking in Berlin alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French PM Elisabeth Borne states that the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), "must not distort competitiveness".

  • Scholz: "We must do everything to support our companies within the EU framework." Comments from both come as EU trade ministers met earlier today to discuss, among other subjects, the state of EU-US relations in the wake of the IRA.

  • EU Council: "Member States underlined their concern about the discriminatory elements of the US IRA and likely significant repercussions on the competitiveness and investment decisions of the EU industry in particular as regards sectors of crucial importance for our transition to a green economy.They welcomed the launching of work towards finding credible solutions to the EU’s concerns and expected that the process will yield results rapidly."
  • Borne met with Scholz in Berlin to cap a week of efforts in which German and French ministers have held several meetings and press conferences to try to promote an improvement in bilateral relations. Scholz confirmed Germany and France have signed a joint declaration to strengthen energy solidarity.
