Frost-Sefcovic NI Protocol Talks To Move Virtual Due To COVID

Jessica Parker at BBC News tweets that the meeting planned for Friday between UK Cabinet Office minister Lord Frost and European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic will not take place in person due to COVID-19.

  • Instead the meeting to discuss issues with the Northern Ireland protocol is set to take place virtually.
  • There has been little movement from either side on the protocol, with the UK's summer command paper and the EU's response both given short shrift by the other side.
  • While the UK has talked up invoking Article 16 (which disapplies the protocol and is seen by the EU as a risk to the single market), rumours have persisted on a Cabinet split on whether to invoke.
