FTC Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Amazon

The Federal Trade Commission, and 17 state attorneys general, have filed a large-scale antitrust lawsuit against tech giant Amazon.

  • Washington Post reports that the suit, "seeks to bar the company from allegedly abusing its powers to raise prices for shoppers and levy high fees against businesses that sell on its platform."
  • WaPo: "The lawsuit, filed in Western Washington district court, marks a historic political test of one of the world’s most influential companies."
  • Lina Khan, chair of the FTC, said: “Today’s lawsuit seeks to hold Amazon to account for these monopolistic practices and restore the lost promise of free and fair competition."
  • The New York Times: "The lawsuit put the influence and reach of Amazon, a $1.3 trillion behemoth, squarely in the spotlight after years of mounting scrutiny."
  • Reuters reports that Amazon said in response that the result of a successful case against Amazon, "would be fewer products to choose from, higher prices, slower deliveries for consumers," arguing the lawsuit, "is wrong on the facts and the law, and we look forward to making that case in court."
