Gazprom, CNPC Gas Deal Could Free LNG Cargoes in Nov, Dec

NATURAL GAS

The agreement between China’s CNPC and Gazprom for additional gas pipeline imports for the remainder of this year through the Power of Siberia 1 pipeline could free some global LNG cargoes for the remainder of this year according to BNEF.

  • Gazprom initially planned to increase gas deliveries to China to 86.5mcm/d in January 2024, from current levels of 63.4mcm/d, according to PipeChina.
  • The companies didn’t release details on the additional volumes planned but BNEF estimates China will receive an additional 1.4bcm of pipeline gas from Russia in the next two month.
  • This will increase total Russian pipeline gas imports in 2023 to 23.4bcm, a 6% increase from earlier planned volumes of 22bcm, meaning some of the volumes will replace spot LNG cargoes for the remainder of this year, increasing global availability.
