Free AccessGeorgia: Biden Leads Trump, Rep-Dems Tied For 2nd In Special Election
Latest Poll by SurveyUSA/11Alive News has presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden up by 2% on President Donald Trump in the state of Georgia.
- Biden 46%, Trump 44%. 800 Georgia residents sampled, Aug 6-8.
- Poll has incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue narrowly holding onto his US Senate seat, ahead of Democrat Jon Ossoff 44% to 41%.
- In polling for the special election to the US Senate, incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler leads the way with 26% of the vote, with Republican Doug Collins and Democrat Raphael Warnock both on 17%. If no candidate achieves more than 50% of the vote, the top two - even if they are from the same party - go through to a run-off in January.
- As such, the special election could prove crucial in determining control of the Senate should the overall result across the nation be a 49-50 split in favour of the Republicans, a notably possible outcome.
- In the increasingly likely event that Democrat Joe Biden wins the presidential election, should the Senate be split 50-50, his vice-president would hold the casting vote.
- If both Republicans go through to the January run-off, the Republicans could be sure of a 49-51 split, giving them majority control in the Senate. However, should one candidate from each party go through, the outcome of the run-off would determine the majority party for at least the subsequent two years.
