Georgia On A Knife-Edge As Count Resumes, Senate Votes Also Crucial
Ballot counting in the state of Georgia has resumed with the state's 16 electoral college votes, and the Senate seat of Republican David Perdue, on a knife edge.
- Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has said there are under 25,000 ballots left to count.
- Donald Trump's lead over Joe Biden stands at 18,540 votes .
- As of 30 mins ago, there were around 5,000 ballots to be counted in Fulton County, the overwhelmingly pro-Biden county forming the city of Atlanta. Also ballots to count in Chatham county around Savannah (57% to 41% in Biden's favour at present with 87% reported), Muscogee county around Columbus (61% to 37% for Biden with 89% reported), and Clayton county also near Atlanta (84% to 14% for Biden with 84% counted).
- If Biden can take Georgia it would put him on 269 EC votes, one short of victory.
- Also focus on the Senate race between Republican incumbent David Perdue and Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff. Perdue seems set to win more votes than Ossoff, but if he does not win 50%+1 vote of the entire turnout, the election goes to a tie break.
- Presently, Perdue has 2,432,536 votes, equating to 50.03% of the total. Should Perdue's total slip below the 50% mark the election would go to a run-off between him an Ossoff, with Libertarian Party candidate Shane Hazell excluded (Hazell on 112,290 votes at present).
- Runoff would be on Jan 5, alongside the runoff for Georgia's other senate seat. With uncalled NC and Alaska senate seats likely to remain Republican, if the Democrats pick up both of these Georgia seats the Senate would be in a 50-50 tie, with the Vice-President holding the casting vote.
