Germany has increased its net import position to the Netherlands so far in July from the previous month to reach a fresh high so far this year as German PV has slightly decreased, while gas and lignite-fired generation has remained firm. This trend could continue into August as the German front-month contract is at a small premium to the Dutch equivalent.
- German-Dutch net imports have averaged around 585MW over 1-16 July from net imports of around 473MW in June – which was inline with the previous high set in April.
- Germany has only been a net exporter between the hours of 00:00-03:00 CET, with the country flipping back to a net importer for the remaining hours of the day. The highest Dutch imports are seen in the midday (see chart).
- PV output in Germany has averaged about 12GW so far this month, down from 12.5GW in June – which was the highest so far this year.
- Gas generation has remained firm on the month, averaging 3.7GW in July compared to 4.44GW. Lignite output stood at about 7GW compared to 7.3GW across June.
- And onshore and offshore wind have risen to an average of about 9.6GW and 3.02GW, respectively, in July - from 7.8GW and 2.1GW in June.
- Germany could remain at its net import position going into August as the German August power contract closed at €2.57/MWh premium to the Netherlands on 15 July.
