German Weekly Gas Demand Fell 20.5% Below 2018-21 Average

German natural gas consumption last week fell further below the 2018-21 average to 20.5%, compared with 19.9% the week prior, Bnetza data show.

  • Gas demand in Germany increased by 3.3% on the week, driven by an increase in demand from industry which surpassed 2022 levels for calendar week 34.
  • German natural gas reserves stood at 93.85% on 29 August, up from 93.31% a week earlier, GIE data show.
  • German gas output for electricity generation in August increased on the month, replacing some hard coal and lignite-fired burn, and amid lower renewables output this month, data from Fraunhofer ISE show.
  • German gas output for power generation stood at 7.84TWh, or 21.8% of total generation, in August, compared with 7.51TWh, or 19.3%, in July.
  • Solar PV, onshore and offshore wind output in August fell to a share of 37.8%, compared with a share of 46.9% of total output in July.
  • Hard coal and lignite output reached a share of 21.13% this month, up from 13.4% last month.
