Germany Considering Polish Request To Send Tanks To Ukraine

SECURITY

Wires are reporting comments from the German Economy Ministry stating Germany is working "urgently" on a formal request from Poland for a re-export licence to send German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

  • The comments come as European Ukraine allies apply pressure on Germany to relax its stringent re-export rules to allow the transfer of tanks to Ukraine.
  • Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said yesterday that he would build a coalition to apply pressure on Germany to grant the necessary permissions, and although the US outwardly declared that Germany is entitled to make sovereign decisions on military aid, comments from US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin suggested that the US wants Germany to go further with aid.
  • The German government has delivered mixed messaging on the issue with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock appearing to contradict the more cautious messaging of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, saying that Germany "would not stand in the way" of a Polish request to transfer tanks.
  • Germany has one of the strictest sets of rules surrounding the re-export of military equipment and countries generally refrain from issuing formal requests to Berlin for re-export permission.
