Germany Holding Supply of Parts to Russian-Built Akkuyu Nuclear Plant

  • The Russia-built Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey may face issues with the supply of electrical equipment from German Siemens Energy, Kommersant reports. The German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control did not issue all the necessary permits to Siemens Energy for the supply of integrated switchgear to Akkuyu over fears that the parts may be exported to Russia. Hungary has faced similar problems regarding the construction of an additional reactor at the Paks-2 power plant.
  • Bloomberg report that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Turkey this week, visiting a critical but at times vexing NATO ally as President Erdogan copes with the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes. Erdogan has frustrated officials from the US and other NATO member states with his refusal to sign off on membership for Sweden and Finland.
  • NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will hold a joint presser with Foreign Minister Cavusoglu at 0830 GMT/1130 local time before meeting President Erdogan in Ankara at 1030 GMT/1330 local time. Weekly capital flow and private sector loan data is on the docket.
