Germany Shows Interest in Nigerian Gas

LNG

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Sunday that his country was willing to invest in Nigeria gas. He was on another visit to the country over the weekend- his third in two years as energy security has been top of the agenda after the loss of Russian supply.

  • "If we are successful, if there is a better chance of exporting the produced gas ... it is then the question for German companies to do their private business," said Scholz.
  • Germany has had to turn to LNG gas after the loss of Russian piped supplies, significantly increasing energy costs.
  • To date, Germany has two floating LNG import terminals and another in the making, to become operational in the first quarter of next year. A fourth one is also in the plans.
  • Germany recently signed long term supply deals with Qatar and the US but has longer term plans to try and source African gas.
