Germany To Enter Hard Lockdown Over Easter

GERMANY

News wires run comments from German Chancellor Merkel, following her 11-hour meeting with German regional leaders.

  • Germany will observe an "extended period of quiet" (i.e. hard lockdown) over Easter.
  • All stores will be ordered to shut from Apr 1 to 5, with food stores allowed to re-open on Apr 3 (Easter Sunday).
  • Citizens will be asked to stay at home while permitted gatherings will be limited to one other household and no more than five people.
  • Current lockdown measures will be extended through Apr 18 and a plan to cautiously re-open the economy will be postponed.
  • Merkel noted that "we are now in a very, very serious situation" as "the case numbers are rising exponentially and intensive-care beds are filling up again."
