Gerrymandered New York Congressional Map Could Wipe Out Five GOP Seats

US

The New York state bipartisan redistricting committee has failed to reach a compromise on the state's new congressional map. New York is one of the few state legislatures overwhelming controlled by Democrats which leaves two likely next steps for the state's congressional map.

1. The Democrat supermajority in the state legislature could pass a map which wipes out up to five Republican seats (shown below)

2. The map will be decided by the courts after Republicans accuse Democrat state lawmakers of Gerrymandering.

  • New York state Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy has claimed that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) '...looks to California, Illinois and New York to solve the problems...' implying that Pelosi favours aggressive Gerrymandering in blue states to redress a perceived House imbalance caused by redistricting in GOP states.
  • Langworth said: 'We’re looking at all our legal options' suggesting that the New York map is headed to the courts.
