Global Wheat Exports Down 3.5M Tonnes

COMMODITIES

An Atlantic Council report has shown that the Russia invasion of Ukraine has reduced global wheat exports by seven million tonnes from February to March 2022.

  • This shortage will be partially offset by increased production and export from Australia and India but a net deficit of 3.5 million tonnes has been reported.
  • The Spring sowing season in Ukraine has already been disrupted by the war and compounded by dry weather. If disruptions continue there are likely to be geopolitical risks in countries exposed to Ukrainian exports.
  • Potential flashpoints are Turkey, Sudan, and Egypt, all of which import over 50 percent of their wheat from the two countries. All three have experienced political turbulence in recent years and a global grain shortage could lead to an uptick in political violence.
