GOP Negotiator Graves Indicates Lack Of Progress In Debt Limit Talks

US

Garrett Haake at NBC has reported that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) lead negotiator representing him in debt limit negotiations, Rep Garret Graves (R-LA), offered a pessimistic assessment of today's round of talks with the White House.

  • Haake tweets: "Negotiators all just walked out of the room where debt ceiling talks have been going on. Body language not good. Rep. Graves suggesting he thinks WH team being unreasonable. “We’re not going to sit here and talk to ourselves,” he told reporters."
  • The talks continue as progressive Democrats push Biden to take a firmer line in talks and Conservative Republicans indicate they may be unwilling to accept a bipartisan deal which falls short of the measures outlined by the Republican 'Limit, Save, Grow Act.'
  • The GOP House Freedom Caucus adopted a resolution yesterday calling on McCarthy, “to use every leverage and tool at their disposal to ensure the Limit, Save, Grow Act is signed into law.”
  • If Conservative House Republicans vote against a bipartisan debt limit bill it may require as many as 100 House Democrats to vote in favour of the bill.
