Gov't Finalises State Of Disaster Rules, Electricity Minister Nomination Expected Soon

SOUTH AFRICA

News24 reports that President Ramaphosa's administration finalised regulations for the electricity state of disaster announced by the leader in his SONA.

  • The state of disaster "will see faster authorisation to avail land for energy generation and taking steps to facilitate international assistance aimed at alleviating, containing or minimising the state of disaster."
  • The rules were reportedly finalised during yesterday's meeting of the President's Coordinating Council and a special sitting of the Cabinet, which were immediately followed by the gazetting of the regulations.
  • There is also talk of Ramaphosa planning to appoint a non-MP Electricity Minister soon, with Finance Minister Godongwana expected to be sworn in as a lawmaker today to allow for such a move.
  • TimesLive reports that the President is seemingly looking to tap someone from the newly elected ANC National Executive Committee. A source told them that a Cabinet "reshuffle could happen any day or any time."
