Government To Keep Pushing Food Manufacturers On Prices

  • Bloomberg reports Industry Minister Champagne as saying the government is to work with food manufacturers on prices, and that “we’ll keep on pushing them” food prices.
  • We note that food price inflation has moderated from its cycle high of 10.4% Y/Y in January but was still 7.8% Y/Y in July.
  • Monthly run rates are lower and still moderating, but equally have still increased 5.1% annualized in seasonally adjusted terms over the three months to July.
  • The continued strong price growth in a highly visible area of consumer spending, along with the recent strong increases in gasoline prices, is clearly a politically contentious area.
  • Further, spillover from these areas adds risk to core measures continuing to remain sticky at the 3.5-4% range seen since last August.
