Heavyweight ruling party lawmaker Nobuteru Ishihara lost in his single-seat constituency (Tokyo-8) to Harumi Yoshida of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.

  • Ishihara is a former Secretary General of the LDP, leads one of the party's factions and held several ministerial portfolios in past administrations.
  • It seems that Ishihara will not be able to secure a seat through proportional representation.
  • His younger brother Hirotaka Ishihara was also defeated in his single-seat constituency (Tokyo-3) but is expected to win a seat through the proportional representation system.
