House Passes Minibus To Conclude FY24 Appropriations, Greene Submits MTV

US

The House of Representatives has successfully passed a six-bill minibus of FY24 legislation to conclude the lower chamber's work on FY2024 legislation. The package now heads to the Senate where Senate leadership will seeks to fast-track the bill to avert a partials government shutdown at midnight.

  • The vote fell largely as expected with significantly more Democrats voting in favour of the package. Final tally: 286-134 (112 Republicans voted against; 23 voted Democrats against)
  • Multiple news outlets report that hardline conservative Rep Margorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) following the vote. Greene filed the petition as a regular motion, rather than asking for privilege, meaning a vote will not be compelled as it was when Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed the motion which led to the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in October last year.
  • Gaetz told reporters a short time ago he would not support ousting Johnson: “If we vacated this speaker, we’d end up with a Democrat. When I vacated the last one, I made a promise to the country that we would not end up with the Democrat speaker. And I was right. I couldn’t make that promise again.”
