House Select Committee On China To Hold Hearing Critical Technology

US-CHINA

MNI London: The US House of Representatives Select Committee on China will conduct a primetime hearing this evening on, "Ensuring U.S. Leadership in the Critical and Emerging Technologies of the 21st Century." LINK (Livestream 19:00 ET 00:00 BST)

  • Lindsay Gorman of the German Marshall Fund, scheduled to provide testimony, told Congress in June: "On the question of US and European views on technology competition with China, the direction is unequivocally that of convergence."
  • The hearing comes as the White House and Congress both prepare new measures to restrict private investment in China. The Senate yesterday voted overwhelmingly in favour of an amendment to the NDAA that would compel private companies to notify US agencies of any investment in Chinese tech like semiconductors of artificial intelligence.
  • The White House is preparing to unveil a new executive order which may prohibit investments in high-tech sectors like semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, hypersonics, and satellite-based communications.
  • Any such move from the US may incur retaliatory measures from Beijing, like the export controls placed upon critical minerals Gallium and Germanium in response to US-led export controls on chip-making components.
