Houthi Leader-We Will Introduce Military 'Surprises' In Red Sea Ops

Wires carrying comments from Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, leader of the Houthi forces in Yemen, claiming that the group will introduce military "surprises" in their Red Sea operations, which their "enemies" will not expect. The comments come days after asubsea cable used to transfer data between Europe and India was damaged off the coast of Yemen. It is not yet confirmed what caused the damage, but the Houthis have threatned to damage such cables in the past, and are in posession of Iranian-made unmanned underwater drones.

  • Over 10 subsea cables of significant importance to Europe-Asia data and telecommunications transfer are located in and around the Bab el-Mandeb strait separating the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Damage to a number of these could risk major distruption to data transfers, banking, and financial operations between the two continents.
  • On 28 Feb the Houthis reiterated the stance that the attacks on shipping in the Red Sea will only halt when the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza stops.
