Hungary PM CoS: We Will Veto EU Budget As No New Proposals Forthcoming

Tough line being taken by the Chief of Staff to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban this morning, as he states that Hungary will veto the EU's multiannual financial framework and associated COVID-19 recovery package as no new proposals on the 'rule of law' mechanism have been forthcoming.

  • Says that the Hungarian gov't believes the current proposal goes against the Treaty of Lisbon, that it is unacceptable that EU funds should be linked to political criteria, and there is nothing to take to EU court.
  • Remains to be seen whether this hard-ball stance is a negotiating tactic or something that Budapest will stick to.

  • Earlier, the Polish Senate (where the gov't does not have a majority) voted in favour of a resolution to accept the EU MFF as is. This is not legally binding on the gov't, but shows the evident division in Polish politics with regards to the gov'ts stance.
