Hungary Remains Lone Holdout Over Sweden NATO Bid

  • Turkey’s parliament approved Sweden’s accession to NATO after months of deliberations, leaving Hungary as the lone holdout to the defense alliance’s enlargement. Prime Minister Orban said in a post on X that he invited his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson to Budapest for negotiations on the NATO bid. Orban and his ministers have partly blamed Swedish criticism of Hungary’s democratic backsliding as one reason for not moving ahead with ratification in parliament, Bloomberg write.
  • Prime Minister Orban spoke with British foreign secretary of state, David Cameron, over a phone call, the prime minister's press chief said. Cameron said on social media that the talks had focused on Sweden's NATO integration and aid for Ukraine.
  • There are no local economic releases scheduled for today, with unemployment rate data the highlight on Friday (Est: 4.2%; Prior: 4.2%).
