IAEA Chief-Nuclear Deal Is Now "An Empty Shell"

Speaking to the European Parliament, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossis states that the Iran nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPoA) is now "and empty shell". However, he says the IAEA should remain engaged with Tehran to halt the proliferation of nuclear weapons in Iran.

  • Grossi: "Nobody has declared it dead, but no obligation is being pursued, and...every limit that existed in the JCPOA has been violated several times,"
  • Says that he could travel to Tehran in February: "I believe I might be back in Tehran on this and other issues I described to you in February perhaps for a much-needed political dialogue "
  • Grossi: "It's true they have amassed nuclear material for several nuclear weapons but there is no nuclear weapon at the moment. They haven’t proliferated yet. That is why we have to keep engaged"
