IAEA Chief-We'll Make 'All Out Effort' To Stop DPRK Nuclear Program

NORTH KOREA

Speaking in Seoul at a meeting with South Korea President Yoon Suk-yeol, International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi stated that 'we will make an all out effort to stop North Korea's nuclear program and preserve international non-proliferation'.

  • Amid an intensification in missile tests in 2022, Grossi warns that North Korea is 'actively preparing' for a nuclear test, the country's first since 2017.
  • Comes as Yoon makes a request for the IAEA to step up its monitoring of North Korea's nuclear activities.
  • Tensions in northeast Asia remain high as Japan and South Korea deal with the increase in missile activity from Pyonyang. On 14 Dec, US Forces in Korea confirmed that a US Space Force unit would be set up in South Korea in order to, "focus on real-time missile detection and tracking and will boost the deterrence capabilities of the Seoul-Washington alliance", according to a press release.
