IAEA Resolution Heads To Vote- Further Damage To JCPOA Talks

SECURITY
Tensions have increased in Vienna as an International Atomic Energy Agency vote approaches on a resolution criticising Iran for hindering an investigation into uranium traces.
  • The resolution has been poorly received in Tehran and looks like torpedoing the already slim chances of reviving the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear accords.
  • Stephanie Liechtenstein of Foreign Policy: "Hearing resolution will likely be voted on later this evening." According to Liechtenstein the resolution submitted by US and E3 (France, Germany, UK) to the IAEA Board of Governors is "mildly-worded draft and there is no mention of the matter being referred to the UN Security Council."
  • Iran specialist Ali Vaez told CNN: "Tensions at IAEC Board of Governors meeting could be the beginning of another race of sanctions vs centrifuges between Iran and the West or could constitute a useful reminder to both sides of how much better off they'd be if the JCPOA is restored."
  • Trump Secretary of State Mike Pompeo: "Iran may soon gain the capacity to produce nuclear material sufficient to build weapons. As Sec of State, we stifled Iran's capacity to foment terror and deterred its ability to produce a nuclear weapon. Yet, Biden went back to old policies that empower the Mullahs in Iran."
  • The Russian Mission in Vienna Tweeted: "There’s still a chance to restore JCPOA. Sadly some Board members don’t get the sensitivity of the moment, pushing for untimely initiatives like anti-Iran resolution. Clearly Vienna Talks taught them nothing: pressuring Tehran entails escalation."
