Ice Increasing Difficulty for Imports into Inkoo

LNG

Ice around the 3.9m mtpa Inkoo terminal in Finland is increasingly the difficulty to secure cargoes for the terminal, according to Argus.

  • The waters around Finland are prone to ice, but just 51 LNG carriers in the global fleet are ice-relate, with only 10-15 available to deliver.
  • Of the global total, 15 are Russian Arc-7 carriers banned from delivering into Inkoo’s terminal. Others are owned by Novatek and Gazprom.
  • The ice is making some firms reluctant to deliver, especially using a normal LNG vessel, because of problems with insurance and risk. This is despite most LNG vessels being safe to operate in light ice.
  • Inkoo’s location in the Baltic Sea also leaves few options for diverting a cargo.
