UK: In the aftermath of a chastening general election defeat, potential
candidates are emerging for the Labour party leadership.
- Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer (Holborn & St. Pancras) has given an
interview to the Guardian and appeared on Radio 4's Today programme. In these he
criticised the leadership's tactic of side-lining him during election and warned
against a sharp pivot to centrism. Is not yet officially standing.
- Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry (Islington South & Finsbury) has
announced her candidacy in an article penned for the Guardian. Says next leader
should be chosen for "political nous and strategic vision", rather than views on
Brexit or where they come from/represent.
- Left-wing Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey (Salford & Eccles),
favoured candidate of Corbyn & allies, likely to stand on joint ticket with
Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner (Ashton-under-Lyne) as deputy.
- Clive Lewis (Norwich South), Lisa Nandy (Wigan), David Lammy (Tottenham), Jess
Phillips (Birmingham Yardely), and Yvette Cooper (Normanton, Pontefract and
Castleford) also rumoured to be standing.
