India Deploys Warships in Effort to Support Red Sea Shipping

India is sending a growing number of its warships towards the Middle East waterways impacted by Houthi attacks but has fallen short of joining US led attacks as it looks to protect ties with Iran according to the Wall Street Journal.

  • New Delhi has sent 10 warships to the area stretching from the north & central Arabian Sea to the Gulf of Aden, up from 2 that are usually stationed in the region.
  • So far, naval vessels in the region, including those from the US, have failed to stop Houthi attacks, evident after a US navy ship was unable to safely escort two Maersk vessels past Yemen on Wednesday.
  • They were targeted and then diverted away from the passage. US officials claim the attacks missed their intended targets.
