India Min-G20 Discussed WTO Reforms, No Decision Until Feb

Speaking at the conclusion of the G20 Trade and Investment Ministers' Meeting in Jaipur, Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal states that the ministers 'Discussed WTO reforms', adding that 'Any decision to be taken [will happen] during next ministerial meeting in February 2024 in Abu Dhabi.'

  • States that 'G20 members agree for enhancing access to information for small and medium businesses.'
  • Minister: 'G20 members discuss steps to prevent trade frictions, monitor trade and investment-related measures.'
  • Minister: In 17-page document, G20 trade ministers did not see consensus only on one paragraph for 'obvious reasons' (likely referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine).
  • Separately, following talks between Goyal and UK Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch, the Indian minister states that they 'Made good progress with UK on FTA discussions', but that they were 'not working with a deadline.' Says that 'India, UK will have another round of discussions' and that India is 'Committed to a good outcome at the fastest speed.'
