OIL: India Receives Sanctioned Russian Crude in Wind-Down Period

A total of 4.5mbbl of Russian crude has delivered to ports in India on vessels sanctioned by the US on Jan. 10, according to Kpler cited by Bloomberg. 

  • The deliveries were on Urals grade tankers Arjun, Zaliv Amurskiy, Corum, Sagitta, Mercury and Zenith which will no longer be able to deliver crude after a wind-down period.
  • The US has set a deadline of Feb. 27 for cargo deliveries that were loaded prior to Jan. 10.
  • India also received 5.3mbbl of Russian Urals, Novy Port and Varandey crude on the six non-sanctioned vessels Maisha, Jaguar, Vernal, Nagarjuna, Katiuska and Fossil.
  • Indian buyers of Russian crude are pushing to clear payments in a shorter period to try and avoid any U.S. sanctions issues according to Bloomberg sources. Payments are also being settled in other currencies to avoid dollar related issues.
  • Russia is still the largest crude supplier to India so far this year, holding a 31% share of total imports 1.5mb/d, Kpler shows.
