Industry Commissioner-EU Will Not Remain Passive On US Subsidies

Wires carrying comments from European Commissioner for Industry Thierry Breton speaking in the German capital Berlin, stating that the Commission, "will not remain passive on new US subsidies", adding that "...we must protect European competitiveness."

  • The comments come as part of a growing chorus of EU voices warning of retaliation against the United States should the EU not be provided similar preferential terms to Mexico and Canada regarding the incoming Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), in particular related to electric vehicles.
  • On 25 November, EU trade minister stated that they wanted a solution by 5 December, when the EU-US trade and technology council next meets.
