Initial Jobless Claims Still Above One Million

  • Initial jobless claims came in at 1,006K, slightly above the estimate of 1,000K.
  • Continuing claims were down 223K from the previous week to 14,535K in the Aug. 15 week, but still above the estimate of 14,400K.
  • Prior week's initial jobless claims were revised down 2K to 1,104K from 1,106K.
  • Continuing claims from the prior week were revised down by 86K to 14,758K from 14,844K.
  • The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending August 8 was 27.017M, a decrease of 1.042M from the previous week. There were 1.644M persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2019.
