UK: Interesting point from Institute for Gov'ts Dr Catherine Haddon:
- "A reminder that election of Speaker is due next Monday. If today's bill
passes and MPs choose election 12 Dec (Gov view), current Parliament elect next
Speaker. If MPs choose 9 Dec (LD/SNP), Parl dissolves Friday, Speaker elected
when new Parliament meets."
- Could be tempting for gov't to have election on Dec 9 as (if the Conservatives
win a majority) you could see Lindsay Hoyle take over from John Bercow. Hoyle is
believed to be the gov'ts preferred choice for Speaker, seen as more of a
traditionalist than the incumbent.
- Whereas selection of Speaker by current parliament could see Harriet Harman
elected to the Chair. Viewed as Bercow Mk.II: more interventionist, keener to go
against established precedent, and viewed as more favourable to Remain by
Brexiteers.
