ENERGY SECURITY

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian is in Ankara, Turkey today to discuss long-term cooperation. According to Al Jazeera, energy security is also on the agenda.

  • Abdollahian told reporters a short time ago: "In addition to bilateral relations, we will discuss the drafting of a comprehensive long-term cooperation document and will make preparations for the signing it by the heads of the two states."
  • Abdollahian continued: "In addition to the Turkish Foreign Minister [Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu], I will also meet with Mr. [President] Erdogan to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments, including the situation in Syria."
  • Iranian analyst Hossein Ghazanfari writes: "Iran FM in Turkey is supposed to meet Erdogan tonight. Turkey which is heavily dependent on foreign sources of energy, has expressed its desire for Iranian oil before."
  • The visit demonstrates a recent increased willingness from Ankara to repair fractured regional relationships and comes a week after a visit from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman.
