The April 13 Iranian assault on Israel which saw the majority of over 300 drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles intercepted by Israel's "Iron Done" systems could compel the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson (R-LA), to fast-track consideration of the supplemental aid package which include new aid for Israel, Ukraine, and other US allies.
- In the aftermath of the attack, President Joe Biden convened a call with Johnson, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to discuss, "the urgent need for the House of Representatives to pass the national security supplemental as soon as possible."
- Johnson said, without explicitly ruling out the additional of Ukraine aid: “The House Republicans and the Republican Party understand the necessity of standing with Israel. We are going to try again this week, and the details of that package are being put together right now.”
- House Republicans will meet today at 17:30 ET 22:30 GMT to discuss, "Iran's recent attack on Israel and defense supplemental funding."
- Considering time constraints and Johnson's narrow majority, he likely has to pass a standalone Israel aid bill, similar to the one which wasblocked by Democratsin February, or hold a vote on the USD$95 billion Senate-passed package. Both options entail major risk for Johnson and will face robust opposition from House conservatives. However, Johnson may be insulated from a move to oust him after an endorsement from former President Donald Trump on Friday - potentially offsetting opposition to a vote which includes Ukraine funding.
