Iran FM: Tehran Ready To Restore Relations w/Saudi At Any Time

Reuters and Al Jazeera reporting that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has stated that recent dialogue between Iran and Saudi Arabia has been 'positive and constructive', and that Tehran stands ready 'to restore relations at any time'.

  • The seeming positivity of the comments are surprising, given the long standing adversarial and competitive relationship between the two nations, which have contested for regional supremecy for decades.
  • Bilateral relations were suspended in 2016 when Saudi authorities executed political dissident and Shia cleric Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, sparking the storming of the Saudi embassy in Tehran by angry mobs.
  • The resumption of bilateral relations - if possible - could prove the first step towards a cessation of conflict in Yemen. The proxy conflict between Iran and Saudi played out in devastating fashion in Yemen has become an extremely costly endeavour for Riyadh, with authorities there seen to be seeking a way to scale down the conflict.
