Irish FM-New Air Of Optimism On Brexit Has Created Flicker Of Opportunity

Speaking to RTE, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney states that on Brexit, a 'new air of optimism has created a flicker of opportunity' but that 'we shouldn't get carried away with it'.

  • Says that there is a "genuine effort in this new team in the UK to reach out to Dublin and Brussels".
  • Some have speculated that the UK gov't is keen to get a deal on the Northern Ireland protocol over the line before mid-December. This is when under a coalition agreement the position of Irish Taioseach (PM) will pass from Fianna Fail incumbent Micheal Martin to former Taioseach, and current Tanaiste (Deputy PM) Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar.
  • Some in UK Conservative party see Varadkar as more hardline on Brexit issues than Martin, although should be noted yesterday Varadkar speaking at a conference said the protocol was a “little too strict”.
  • All in all, despite the issues facing Truss gov't domestically, the mood music around a deal on the Northern Ireland Protocol is the best it has been in many months, if not years.
