ISI/Ipsos Poll Suggests National Coalition Made Up Of Opposition Parties Is Unlikely

SOUTH AFRICA

The latest GovDem opinion poll conducted by Ipsos for the Inclusive Society Institute (ISI) in November-December 2022 showed that the opposition would be highly unlikely to form a cohesive ruling coalition if a general election was held the day after the data was collected.

  • The poll put the governing African National Congress on 45%, well ahead its closest rivals from the Democratic Alliance, which was picked by 16% of respondents.
  • Correcting for electoral turnout, the survey estimated the likely performance of the ANC at 49.9%-50.6%, depending on the level of turnout.
  • The ISI said that "currently no opposition coalition can be ushered in without the support of the [radical left-wing] EFF," which has been ruled out by the DA.
  • "The stark choice confronting voters is a more policy-cohesive coalition versus a policy-incohesive coalition, the likes of which compare to those in Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni."
  • The full summary of the poll can be accessed here. It is worth bearing in mind that its findings might be a little bid outdated now, as the domestic political situation has evolved over the past months.
