Italy’s New LNG Terminal Faces Resistance From Municipality

NATURAL GAS

Italy’s planned floating LNG Terminal in Piombino is facing appeals from local residents and the municipality, while Italy is in urgent need to replace Russian import gas, according to the WSJ.

  • The new 5bcm floating LNG terminal will be located in Piombino, Tuscancy, and is scheduled to come online in May 2023.
  • Piombino residents have been up in arms against the project. A court in Rome is due to consider the mayor's legal challenge to the terminal later this week. The municipality's lawsuit, on grounds of safety, argues that the vessel wouldn't be able to leave Piombino's port quickly in case of an accident.
  • Italian government officials hope the court will reject the town's appeal but fear it might also order the suspension of construction work while it considers the case more deeply.
  • Italy has been dependent on Russian gas and getting new infrastructure up and running as soon as possible is a matter of national security, officials say.
