Japan May Household Spending +11.6% y/y; 3rd Rise In 6 Months

  • Average monthly spending by Japanese households with two or more people increased 11.6% y/y in May, after rising 13.0% y/y last month, marking the third rise in recent six months.
  • Spending on food increased 2.1% in May, narrowing from last month's 3.5% increase.
  • Spending on fuel, lighting and water fell 2.7% y/y, after falling 5.1% in April.
  • The average real income of households with salaried workers decreased 2.6% y/y in May, compared with the 2.8% y/y increase reported last month.
