Japan Raised US LNG Imports In March

Japan reduced Russian LNG imports in March by 40%, compared to a year earlier, replacing it with purchases from the US, data released by Japan's finance ministry showed.

  • Japan imported 425k tons of LNG from Russia in March, down by around 40% on the year, while supplies from the US rose by 41% year on year to 268k tons.
  • Japan imported 2.4mn tons of LNG from Australia in March, its largest source of imported LNG. This was down by 12% from last year’s levels.
  • Imports from Malaysia were flat on the year at around 1.05mn ton.
  • The finance ministry's data is compiled under rules that allow importers to delay clearing imports through the customs bureau, meaning the data is often out of date.
