Japan's Mitsui Chemical Closed Sakai Cracker Dents Naphtha Demand

Japanese petchem producer Mitsui Chemical shut its Sakai-based cracker on October 28 because of pipeline issues according to Argus sources – reducing immediate demand for naphtha.

  • The 455,000 t/yr cracker is expected to restart in a week's time according to its sources – forcing it to cancel some planned naphtha import tenders.
  • Asian naphtha demand has been sluggish because of overall weak cracker margins and reduce operating rates.
