Japan Sep Exports -4.9% y/y; 22nd Fall

  • Japan's exports declined 4.9% y/y in September for the 22nd consecutive monthly fall, much slower than the previous 14.8% y/y drop in August.
  • Imports reported a 17.2% y/y decrease in September, following a 20.8% y/y drop in August, marking the 17th consecutive monthly fall.
  • July's trade balance was a surplus of Y675.0 billion after last month's Y249.0 billion deficit
  • Exports to China and the United States rose 14.0% y/y and 0.7% y/y respectively. Exports to the European Union fell 10.6% y/y.
  • Imports from the United States and the European Union registered falls of 9.9% y/y and 13.0% y/y respectively. Imports from China fell 11.9% y/y.
