Japan Sept Inflation Quickened; +3.0% Y/Y

  • Japan's national average core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) rose 3.0% from the year earlier in September, faster than the 2.8% growth marked in August, marking the 14th increasing month.
  • Energy rose 16.9% y/y, flat from the previous growth, contributing 1.28 percentage points to CPI.
  • The underlying inflation rate measured by the core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) increased 1.8% y/y, expanding from the 1.6% growth last month.
  • Prices for ex-perishables rose 4.6% y/y, following last 4.1% y/y increase.
  • Prices for household spending rose 11.3% y/y, faster than the 6.3% y/y growth reported in August, and prices for accommodation rose 6.6% y/y, sharply higher than the previous 2.9%.
