Japanese Typhoon Ampil Disrupting Travel

Japan has grounded hundreds of flights and encouraged evacuations in the eastern part of the country on Friday due to a strong typhoon that has caused power blackouts in the middle of a major summer holiday week.

  • Japan’s top power producer Jera has halted LNG tanker unloading as Typhoon Ampil approaches.
  • The typhoon is expected to get close to the eastern region of Kanto, which includes the capital Tokyo, on Friday evening.
  • Japan Airlines is planning to cancel 281 domestic and 38 international flights on Friday, affecting about 50,000 passengers.
