Japanese Utility LNG Stocks Extend Decline to 1.79m Tons in Aug

LNG storage at major Japanese power utilities fell to 1.79m tonnes in August, down by 0.96m tonnes on the year and 0.21m tonnes below the five-year average according to trade ministry data.

  • Storage levels continued to fall into early September, falling by 13.9% on the week to 1.73m tonnes by the 3 Sep.
  • Stocks are already below the five year average of 2.06m tons for the end of September and are down 35% from 2.66m tons a year ago.
  • The weather forecast isn't offering much relief from the summer heat, with temperatures still hitting mid-30s Celcius into mid-month, and power consumption only slightly down from August so far according to ICIS.
