Japan’s LNG Stockpile Drop To 16-Month Low

LNG stockpiles held by Japanese electric utilities has fallen to a 16-month low as a hot summer has bolstered cooling demand, according to data from Japan’s Energy Ministry.

  • Typhoons in the Pacific have also delayed the arrival of some cargoes, preventing inventory restocking, according to Reuters.
  • LNG inventories held by utilities fell to 1.81m mt Aug. 20, the lowest level since April 2022. This compares to 1.94m mt the previous week.
  • By comparison, the 5-year average for the month of August is 2m mt.
  • Electricity utilities hold around half of Japan’s LNG stocks.
  • Temperatures have reached and even exceeded 35C in Japan, which have driven up demand for air-conditioning.
