- Economists doubt surplus will last, with May-June marking the first
back-to-back surpluses since 2016 and global trade tensions increasing
- June exports -5.1% to C$50.3B; losses in 10/11 product groups; June imports
-4.3% to C$50.2B
- Declines in both exports and imports were concentrated in aircraft &
transportation and energy
- June was the first full month following the removal of steel and aluminum
tariffs imposed by Canada and the US in mid-2018
- Steel exports +15.8%; Aluminum exports +47.2%
- Canada's trade surplus with the US edged down C$0.2B in June from May's
surplus of C$5.9B, the highest since 2008
