June Factory Sales Record +21%, Still 13% Below Pre-Covid Peak

  • Sales ex-autos +10%, Statistics Canada said Friday
  • Total Q2 sales record -23% to CAD125b, lowest value since 2009
  • Factory utilization rate still 8pp below June 2019 level of 81.3%, signalling incomplete recovery from pandemic
  • Motor vehicle (+282%) and parts (+190%) led gains as "most plants returned to full production following shutdowns earlier in the pandemic. Despite this monthly increase, sales of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts were down by one-quarter (-24.4%) compared with June 2019"
  • Petroleum/coal +32% to CAD3.3b, second straight gain on higher prices and volumes. Sales still down by about half vs a year earlier
